About our Business and Alpaca Herd

Steve and Emma from TyNewydd Alpacas a family business

Our Family Business

TyNewydd Alpacas was set up by husband and wife team, Steve and Emma Cooper. The couple’s careers began as pig and turkey farmers in Surrey. Their enthusiasm for the rugged beauty of the Welsh countryside and passion for natural, sustainable products led them to move to Wales in 2015. From the spectacular scenery of the Preseli hills, they began their business venture, breeding Alpaca. Their friendly and inquisitive Alpaca herd grew, and with the help of local weaving company, Curlew Weavers in Ceredigion, they began producing their own 100% alpaca wool range of Alpaca fleece products.

TyNewydd Alpacas win a Business Wales award

Expanding With Pride

Initially producing scarves and blankets, Emma and Steve’s Alpaca fleece products range grew to a full range of bed throws, gloves, beanies, booties, scarves, cushions and knee blankets all in 100% naturally coloured alpaca wool. Their home grown and hand-crafted products are sold at local craft markets, farming events and a growing number of retail stockists.

As their business continued to grow, Emma and Steve were lucky enough to win the New Welsh Business Start Up Award in 2018, through Business Wales. Their venture is going from strength to strength and Emma and Steve are currently refurbishing an old barn and turning it into a breeding/welfare unit for the alpacas with a small woollen mill to increase productivity and to extend their range of blankets, all woven by hand with handlooms.

Once the renovation and building work is completed, Steve and Emma are hoping to hire their first employee to help them keep up with the increased demand for their much sought after products.

Our Herd

Emma and Steve’s friendly and inquisitive alpaca herd live on their farm in Carmarthenshire. The husband and wife team and their family, feed and shelter their llama-like herd against the dramatic elements of the West Wales weather. Alpacas are rapidly gaining popularity as a wool livestock animal, the species have 22 recognised natural fleece colours, ranging from white, fawns, greys, browns and black. The Alpaca are shorn once a year in May and a young alpaca can yield up to a kilogram of fleece, this is then cleaned on site at the farm.

Our Yarn

Currently the fresh soft alpaca fleece is taken to Curlew Weavers, a local woollen mill in Ceredigion. In the future, by building their on-site mini woollen mill, they can spin more yarn on site reducing their carbon footprint and creating a truly home crafted product. Emma and Steve are passionate about the quality of their Alpaca products, controlling the process from beginning to end, Take a look at their shop and their ever expanding product range.
